The Gorge

As the upcoming Gorge shows sold out yesterday, this weekend we will travel back in time to the summer of 1997 and Phish’s first visit to the venue.  Pulling into central Washington at the beginning of August, Phish was midway through their summer of deep funk and this translated beautifully to the open air beauty of The Gorge. The first night was darker and dancy, wile the second was celebratory and triumphant.  After this initial visit, Phish felt right at home at the best venue of the west coast.

What’s the deal with Shoreline? Is this personal history you’re referencing? Road trips are amazing. Road trips and playing music on stage are my favorite things to do. That and sitting in the sun. I’d love a road trip TOWARDS PHISH. That would DEFINITELY be something!

I’m actually having a tough time deciding. I really wanna go for RR, for millions of reasons, but I also would really love to go down to the Gorge and Shoreline, because, in my thinking, seeing Phish anywhere is good enough for me.

  2. 5th in line at blockbuster, they did a lottery of about 9 people…first guy mid 200l 2nd guy 3 back 200…3rd all gone. had my labtop going as well. hung out in the store and kept having her refrsh…puulled 2 lawnboys 1215. whatever…im in

that being said I have jones beach both nights, and great woods pav’s for red rocks tix. gotta get to morrison…

  3. no, not my personal history. i’ve only been to san fran twice. mostly for its history with the dead & bill grahmm (sp? you know who i mean.) and the fact that phish always throws down there. kinda like how they always do at star lake but that venue is a cookie cutter summer shed. shoreline has some character. or so i gather.

at least this isn’t summer 2000 where i’d have to go straight to alpine from pittsburgh. road trip thru deer creek will be nice.

(i’ve said this before but i’ll repeat it cause i’m stoked): i figure that if i’m out in wisconsin and rothbury is across lake michigan 2 weekends later i may as well go west and see some sights rather than go all the way back to pa and head out again. i’ll only have 2 days home before all good 13. and getting lottoed for spac was totally unexpected so i have the opportunity to cross the adirondacks off my list too.

living in the boulder (free zone – king fans), have you ever been to the laramie/medicine bow region? or great sand dunes? i’ve wanted to go to the dunes for years (ever since i found out about them) and medicine bow is one of the most incredible places i’ve ever been to. dig the gigantic lincoln bust at the one rest stop off 80 before laramie. (been to rocky mtn np too.)

i could take the highway thru the great divide but will save that experience for another year. flaming gorge is pretty spectacular too. mmmm but just thinking about the smell of all that pine in medicine bow. wow. best air i’ve breathed so far.

  4. needless to say go to red rocks if you get the chance but it seems that those are going to be harder tix to get than the hampton comeback. but since you live right there why not give it a shot

  5. Mugician Says:

    Yeah.

Living in Boulder is nice most of the time. We have the best spring bloom, the best hiking, and some damn good snow. The down side is all the yuppie/pretentious/downright vapid idiots that live here too.

Anyway, Colorado is fucking gorgeous. Haven’t been to the dunes in Alamosa (Great Sand Dunes NP) yet, but I have been to White Sands in New Mexico, and THAT is an epic place. Really, you could spend 10 years walking around Colorado and never get bored – there’s a little too much to see for such a relatively small area.

Red Rocks would be awesome. As I’ve mentioned before, it would be my first Red Rocks show, and also my first Phish show. And I’m pretty damn sure (from what I’ve heard about RR, and seen and heard from Phish) that there isn’t a better combo to be had.

    Fuck.

  6. Huge ‘Walls of the Cave’ at Red Rocks.

  7. AintNoTele Says:

Is anyone looking for Dead tix in Greensboro? Maybe a trade?

  8. Mugician Says:

Does anyone know where I can get that televised Phish gig from Germany? 2/17/97? I remember that some German television station taped it and it was the first time I had seen Phish playing, and I’d love to grab another copy.

  9. Huge ‘Walls of the Cave’ at Red Rocks.

    TRUE THAT!!!

  10. wizzle1986 Says:

used to be able to download 2-16-97 on bittorrent, no links are longer active….I’m sure someone at tradersden.com would send you a copy

  11. Henry Holland Says:

Mugician, I got it from here:

    http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/index.php

You’ll have to sign up to do a search but it’s easy. Of course, the downside is that it’s BitTorrent, so for such a huge file it could easily take 2 days to download. Worth it, though, it’s a hot show on a tiny stage.

  12. wizzle1986 Says:

actually demonoid.com has an active link barely..you want 2-16-97 wastessel, germany (rockpalast)

  13. wizzle1986 Says:

i wasn’t wild about this show though…cool Crosseyed and Bowie IMO…I’ve always wanted 7-6-98 Prague, though

  14. wizzle1986 Says:

and for a quick fix youtube has most of this content

  15. Yeah, but I also had my friends copy stolen from me, so I kinda owe it to him to get him another, and getting one myself.

I just remember however long ago it was, SEEING Phish for the first time on video, and having a ball watching Trey leave the room completely while he played. I rediscovered Phish that day, and I’ve been on an upward spiral ever since, but just that one magical night, seeing him TEAR it up and being completely removed from this dimension was special for me.

I haven’t really ever thought to ask, but are there other full concerts that were filmed like this? Good quality audio, and good filming, not just shaky-dizzying crowd stuff?

I’m assuming by the way Wizzle was talking about 7-6-98, that there are indeed similar quality videos other than IT and Coventry and what not…

By the way (again), what’s the general feeling about IT around here? I personally really like the whole damn thing. In fact I love it….

  16. wizzle1986 Says:

There is Woodbury Ski Resort—4-29-90…pro-shot by the venue with a couple of other bands, and was actually sold by the venue for a while…hard to find for download though…not the most raging show though as is the case with a lot of video bootlegs. I know what you mean though, I am always looking for Phish video on the internet, but get annoyed with the shaky/sketchy/amateur crap that is out there…There’s not much else pro stuff out there besides the aforementioned and Rockpalast, that I know of. I would seriously just pay the $50 and get Clifford Ball from Amazon….it’s the cream of the crop…pretty much all the livephish video releases are hot shit, and Walnut Creek is good, too…you’ve probably already seen all of these

  17. wizzle1986 Says:

oh yeah and phish taped a lot of stuff from 94 on…so expect more releases, along with any outdoor shows that had screens for better viewing…I still don’t know why they didn’t release Prague video along with the LivePhish audio, you can catch that on youtube, and it is obviously from the soundboard a la other LivePhish releases

  18. Whoops. I didn’t mean “Coventry”, totally meant Clifford. Fuckin’ delirious here. I haven’t seen much of Walnut Creek except a RIPPING Taste. Page was absolutely raging it. And then the thunder. I definitely wanna check out Clifford Ball, but I can’t afford it right now since I just bought 3 tickets ;).

  19. 8th in line at Blockbuster.
a few people in front of me got lawns.
i got 2 pavilion on the phone – 3 minutes after the tix inside stopped.
    go figure.

    it’s official. i’m seeing phish again. 🙂

  20. Mugician Says:

    Good for you!
